Greetings,
According to my randomly spotty memory. I do
remember that the committee writing the customary wasn't in
favor of having champions succeeding themselves. For all of
the reasons that have been given so far. It does look like it didn't
make it into the final customary. Other than the sections that
did made it in, hinting at the decision that Avine posted. I have
no ideas on what happened when the final version was written.
It was however, rolled in with the same suggestion that we needed
at least two competitors to have a championship. No default winners.
Of course that means in the recent past, our current champion(s)
were "unable to step down" for "several" years. Unless they chose to
resign and leave the position in abeyance. Which doesn't really look
good for that person. Or for us really.
It does appear that we have an unintended consequence with
our champions being "generally" unable to hold multiple
championships elsewhere. Depending on how we enforced it.
IE: if a person was "stuck" with our championship for multiple
years, would that prohibit them from competing in another one?
As far as I remember, that question did not come up when the
customary was being written.
Fortunately we have recently allowed an out by their excellencies
having the option of granting exceptions.
Yet something else for the next "customary convention"
squawk sheet. LOL... sigh)
I do like the idea that we move the champions off of seafair
weekend. I know that the regional calendar is full of non SCA
events but this particular event does have overlap with the
SCA community. Going to any other weekend in August will
also overlap with one of the three current weekends of the
W WA renfaire. Overlapping one weekend of that would
probably be better than overlapping a single weekend
nasty traffic generating event like seafair.
Since the customary is confusing on this question, I humbly suggest
we throw the decision into the lap of their excellencies for this
year only. then hash out the discrepancies in the customary
sometime before our next champions event. I do think it may
be necessary for someone other than the champion to put
together the competition format if they are competing. How
we do that may need to be again thrown into the laps of their
excellencies for at least this year.
ROFL I so enjoy throwing things into the laps of their excellencies
for some strange reason right now....... <ducking for cover now>

At the time of the writing of the customary, this subject was brought up.
Many of us did not want champions to "defend" their championship because we
did not want someone having the opportunity to camp out and monopolize a
particular championship as had been seen in other Baronies. I have not
changed my opinion.
Also, it is suggested that they cannot repeat by the wording:
8.3.1.d) Assisting in coordinating a tournament to choose their successor.
8.3.1.e) Attending both the tournament to choose their successor and the
successor's investiture.
We haven't been at this as a Barony very long. It's not a surprise that we
don't have a lot of competitors in some fields. Give it a little more time.
Perhaps sweeten the pot a bit by comp'ing each champion's site fee for Feast
and the next Champion's event.

To the People of Wyewood,
We have been recently notified that one of our champions has so enjoyed
their tenure that they wish to defend their position. After reviewing the
Customary, we have determined that there is nothing clearly barring our
Champions from doing so, we know that Wyewood has a tradition of not
allowing Champions to succeed themselves.
What say you?
Please reply and tell us Yay (champions should be able to succeed
themselves) or Nay (champions should wait until the next tournament), and
Why.
With our Champions event being this coming Saturday, we ask that any
commentary be sent to us before Noon on Friday, August 25.
