May A.S. LX - President's Letter:
May 27, 2025 | SCA Communications
"A year has passed since I stepped up as President, and a lot has changed from when I started.
The Order of the Mark was created to recognize those that pursue mastery in ranged weapons. A Crown was chosen by rapier combat. Several administrative updates are occurring such as centralization of documentation, improvements in data management, and various process improvements. Communications have been more frequent internally within the Society and externally to the membership. There is more transparency from the Society by adding a Code of Conduct which lays the foundation to be able to cite sanction violations. The Society is moving towards more consistent rules, and accountability has been prioritized for the benefit of this game as well as the people that play it. The SCA has also reaffirmed commitment towards building an inclusive third space so that people can live history more safely. We have also launched an Official SCA Discord<https://discord.gg/scasocial> to bring the community together and to provide a platform for more avenues of engagement.
The SCA is the largest living history group in the world. A group built by amazing volunteers found at all levels of this organization. Due to recent expansion, there are more people involved on the Society level than there have ever been. We often view ourselves categorized in different groups based on region or role, but at the heart of it all, we are still a part of the same organization. Many of us love and are invested in the SCA even if we don't always agree with how to best move forward. To me, the SCA rises and falls together. As President, I strongly believe that a rising tide lifts all boats.
Going forward into my second year, we will continue to improve our financial positioning and continue the work on alleviating administrative burden on volunteers. The Corporation needs consistency, and this is balanced with the constraints of volunteers who have lives outside of the SCA. We will continue to work on ways to make the administration of the SCA more efficient.
We will also focus on completing the integration of DEIB into our organization. This begins with filling out the officer roles on the Society and Corporate level. Everyone deserves to be able the play the SCA as who they are, as long as they abide by our core values and rules. We will continue to make the SCA more accessible to people with different backgrounds and capabilities.
I am not a person that likes to settle for what is, instead, I look forward to what can be. Change takes time, but reflecting on the last year, change is happening. I am positively excited for the future of the SCA and what we are building together.
