Wyewood,

We also have received an application for the office of A&S Minister. Please respond to Their Excellencies and I with any commentary on your support or concern of Lady Sofia.

Greetings, Your Excellencies Evrard and Alessandra, and Officers of the Barony of Wyewood

Please consider me, Lady Sofia de Toledo, for service as the Arts and Science Officer for the Barony of Wyewood. To support that consideration, I would like to offer the following.

In the beginning…. I applied to be the A&S Officer, and was nominally the deputy. When the office was again open, I was Exchequer, and couldn’t apply. But, I am now able to do so!

As the A&S Officer for the Barony of Wyewood, my goals would be:

  * Increase the overall range and depth of understanding and capability in both Arts and Sciences of our group.
  * Teaching is a wonderful way to improve our understanding of things we (think we) know well. I would be attempting to get each member to identify one thing (or more things!) they want to investigate and share with others.
  * Activities in the actual Middle Ages were seldom individual – and more often group activities. We should be support to each other, and all learn.
  * One of my “skills” is listening, and I have listened with great interest to discussions about A&S activities in Dragon’s Laire. They have had great success (just count those Laurels and Pelicans!), and it is through very conscious effort. This is a transition that would take years, and much more than any one person’s efforts. I would like to take part in starting this transition!

Various interests and capabilities I would bring to a role as Wyewood A&S Officer are below – likely in far more detail than you will care to read! In response to a recent An Tir A&S post, I identified my interests as all things culinary and most things fiber. More detail…

Culinary:

  * Participated in Barony Culinary activities, and have been in the kitchen or serving lunch for every Wyewood event since the beginning of my SCA participation.
  * Lady Symonne and I won a Siege Cooking competition at An Tir/West War some few years ago.
  * The challenges and opportunities of using “Period” foods and spices intrigues me
  * Current interests (in addition to the ongoing Andalusian food interests) are in the direction of fermentation and cheese…
  * It is time to restart Culinary!

Fiber Arts:

  * Fiber Nights (evolved from Knitting Night!) have been on my calendar since Lady Wenyeva was hosting, and I have only missed few of them!
  * Won an early A&S prize – Laurels’ Choice – for a knitted bag.
  * Tablet Weaving is probably the most period fiber activity that has taken hold of me. I have participated in a long term class in Silverdale led by Dame Madrun. (Baron Evrard has asked me to begin a local class, I have accepted the invitation, and am considering options to begin.)
  * Attended a range of A&S classes as offered within the Barony (didn’t do the marshaling!) – also at events within Kingdom and at Pensic 43. I have dabbled in Blackwork and embroidery, natural dyeing in the field (indigo and others), medicinals, finger loop braiding, persona development, and illumination. On a major “want” list is lamp work – it will happen.
  * Sewing – using my sewing machine primarily, but can do a rolled hem and hidden seams.

Mundane Fiber Interests:

  * Fiber spinning - I have a couple of spinning wheels, can use a spindle, but prefer the speed of a wheel!
  * Weaving – I have a couple of looms. I do weave, though most of my weaving has ended up being Tablet Weaving.
  * Knitting and crochet - I knit, and can crochet (not period – ask me about my theory on this!)
  * Director of a local spinners guild (NwRSA, Area 2060)
  * Seattle Weavers Guild (SWG) – I am a member and manage their membership list. I am also a member of the SWG Tablet Weaving Study Group.

In Service,

Lady Sofia de Toledo
