I agree that allowing champions to succeed themselves could be alright with
the permission of the Baronage, but I would stipulate that they can only
serve as champion twice before they must take a break. Another
consideration: champions set up and run their field of competition at the
event, and to do so while also competing can sometimes be a lot of work,
and can lead to the competition itself seeming less fair, or even just
sloppy. I've born witness to this effect in small shires and baronies, and
to the effect of having the same person being champion for years on end.
Stagnation sets in quickly.
I propose that if a champion wishes to compete the next year, they must
publicly seek and gain permission from the Baronage (because transparency
is our friend), *and* they must arrange for someone else to run the
competition, again with permission from the Baronage. Included in this
seeking permission is a statement of acknowledgement that they shall not
compete for championship in that field the following year.
